Decomposers
Decomposers are living beings which close the nutrient cycle, enabling tiny pieces of organic matter to turn into inorganic matter. Their role is necessary in every ecosystem, or otherwise plants could not obtain nutrients from poor soils.

In this fallen beech trunk, we can see the results of decomposition processes which involve diverse species of decomposers over a few weeks. Their nurturing hastens the rotting of the trunk and the conversion of organic to inorganic matter.
Some people say decomposers are below of primary producers, at the bottom of trophic pyramids.
